Palanpur Civil Hospital taken over by Wockhardt

Wockhardt Hospitals took over management of the Palanpur Civil Hospital on January 12, 2009 as per the terms of the MoU signed between the company and Gujarat government some months ago. The formalities of the handover will be completed by the end of the month.

The over 75-year old institution thus became the first government-run hospital in the country to be taken over by a private company.

The 275-bed hospital is the only one in Banaskantha district. It is spread over a 19-acre campus and was inaugurated by then British political agent Colonel Merry Weather. It was earlier known as Good Fellow Hospital.

Amidst criticism that the privatization move would harm the interests of the poor, district collector R.J. Patel said that “the district administration will ensure the interest of the poor is not neglected in the changed scenario.”

Wockhardt group chairman Habib Khorakiwala hails from Palanpur.
